ECR member and Csongrád-Csanád county council member Anna Magyar's opening remarks to participants of the October CoR plenary were "to focus more on families than we do at present". Her statement was part of the broader debate on the Conference on the Future of Europe with guest speaker Commissioner Šuica.
Ms Magyar's observations on the future of Europe cautioned against "ruining the future for our grandchildren". For the ECR member, "the future could be very promising for them if they have the opportunity to be born at all".
Providing the example of Hungary, her home country, where families raising children receive a wide range of financial assistance such as tax breaks and education grants, Anna Magyar stated that "the natural striving to pass on our lives to our children should not be hampered by financial problems".
With a birth rate on the rise from 1.2 to 1.5, "why not use the Hungarian example as best practice across Europe?", concluded the ECR member.
