ECR CoR First Vice-President Władysław Ortyl's opinion has been adopted by the CoR members during the October plenary session in Brussels. The opinion, which was adopted by unanimity, is a detailed consideration of responsibilities and the role of local and regional authorities in building and nurturing public confidence in drones and its booming industry.
The President of the Podkarpackie Region emphasised the importance of drones in several areas that could benefit regional governance across the EU and stressed that there are many economic benefits to developing regional drone initiatives. "The drone industry can help Europe build a competitive advantage. Local projects will have a positive impact on the EU's overall drone capacity" – stated Marshal Ortyl.
A clear framework at EU level would allow the creation of a truly European market for services and drones, thus realising the potential for job creation and growth. The Marshal stressed the need to regularly assess and fill regulatory, technological, infrastructural, financial and competence gaps across the sector.
"We should invest in training courses for future drone operators and implement specific drone-based projects that clearly benefit our citizens, like assisting emergency services. It is a way of building the necessary public confidence in drones and ensuring all conditions are in place for such modern technologies to flourish" – concluded the Marshal.
