Marche region hosts high-level conference on place-based innovation

Local and regional representatives from across Europe, officials of the Italian government and the European Commission, as well as academics and business leaders participated in a high-level conference concluding a two-day SEDEC External Meeting in Ancona, Italy, hosted by ECR Member Andrea Putzu at the Marche Polytechnic University.

The conference, titled "Place-based innovation for the EU's green and digital transition" called for the development of EU policies in support of local and regional innovation ecosystems, with the aim of empowering place-based innovation in the context of the green and digital transitions. The drive for innovation at a territorial level was at the heart of the opinion recently drafted by Member of the Regional Council of Marche Putzu, unanimously adopted at the plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions in January.

"Today's event marks a significant milestone, inspiring in-depth discussions on innovation. The Marche region is home to many small and medium-sized enterprises, which form the backbone of our economy. It is clear that SMEs must be supported in the process of innovation, not only in the future, but with concrete action taken now" he urged.

ECR Member and President of the Umbria Region Donatella Tesei called for working with an approach that extends beyond regional borders, encouraging regions to "tackle key innovation challenges together". "The synergy of working together in multi-level governance will be fundamental for the effective development of a regional innovation ecosystem which enables the implementation of European policies on the ground" added Francesco Acquaroli, President of the Marche Region.

Adolfo Urso, Minister for Enterprises and Made in Italy, pointed out the importance of mobilising multiple investment sources to implement the green and digital transition in Europe. "Private capital will be of key importance, because public funds, however important they may be, will not suffice alone" he concluded.
