In a plenary debate marking the 20th anniversary of the EU's 2004 enlargement, our First Vice-President Władysław Ortyl highlighted the transformative role that macroregional strategies have played in this historic process.
"This enlargement not only extended the European Union's borders but also opened up numerous opportunities, which were largely embraced by citizens, businesses, and political leaders alike", stressed the President of the Podkarpackie Region.
A notable contribution to the impressive progress witnessed in Central and Eastern European member states was the macro-regional approach behind the "European Funds for Eastern Poland" initiative. Mr Ortyl noted the cooperation and economic growth that the programe fostered, which "significantly impacted five Polish regions, four of which are external border regions of the EU".
Thanks to its comprehensive strategy, in particular investments in trans-regional road and rail infrastructure, smart energy networks, sustainable urban mobility and tourism sector, these funds "have facilitated the remarkable transformation of the Podkarpackie region among others", stated the President of Podkarpackie.
By further enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in this part of Europe, the EU can contribute to stability and security along its eastern flank. "With the EU perspective of Ukraine and Moldova, the need for a comprehensive macro-regional strategy becomes evident" argued Mr Ortyl.
Our First Vice-President concluded by emphasising that "focusing on a macro-regional approach will enable us to effectively address the shared challenges and opportunities that arise in the new geopolitical context."
