Robert Zeman and Lorenzo Galligani spoke at the CoR Plenary debate on the EU-Africa strategy with European Commissioner for International Partnership Jutta Urpilainen underlined how the enormous potential of the African continent and its essential role in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the European Union.
"The EU must work with our African partners to prevent dangerous sea journeys and discourage illegal economic migration. It therefore remains essential that we address the challenges of migration in cooperation with African countries of origin and transit ", said Mr Zeman.
Furthermore, they both encouraged the launch of joint information campaigns aimed at discouraging illegal migration, raising awareness and supporting effective management of migration.
ECR members outlined how the vision presented by the rapporteur is in in line with the so-called "Mattei Plan", promoted by the Italian government and supported by the G7 leaders. The plan aims to promote sustainable development and infrastructure investment, ensuring that Africa’s immense potential is harnessed for the benefit of all. By promoting local value creation and contributing to global stability, "it is possible to build a future of shared prosperity between Africa and Europe, while defending the rules-based international order that is essential for global peace and security", Zeman and Galligani said.
ECR members also underlined the potential of tapping into existing partnerships that EU Member States and regions, such as Lombardy, have already developed with African partners. These partnerships are essential to increase investment in critical infrastructure, expand trade volumes and refine EU initiatives, by adapting them to local realities. "Supporting Africa’s sustainable development is not just an opportunity, but a strategic necessity", concluded Mr Galligani.
