ECON Commission greenlights Galligani's opinion on a modern Single Market

Members of the ECON Commission have today adopted the opinion "Single Market Strategy" by ECR rapporteur Lorenzo Galligani.

"The single market is the core of the EU, and it is essential that the Commission takes an ambitious approach to removing single market barriers" said Mr Galligani following the Commission's vote. "To that end, enhancing cooperation among competent authorities at the EU, national, regional and local levels is crucial".

Citizens and businesses face a multitude of challenges in the EU single market. As highlighted by the ECR rapporteur, while the EU has a vast number of rules for the single market, making them function on the ground for businesses, especially SMEs, is where the challenge lies.

While welcoming the European Commission's stronger focus and efforts to strengthen single market governance, Mr Galligani underlines the need for the Commission to "cut red tape and simplify complex and time-consuming rules and procedures that stand in the way of trade in goods and services".

The full implementation of the single market can happen if we end bureaucracy, fragmented rules, and administrative burdens that pose a hurdle for European enterprises, "especially the small and medium-sized ones, those rooted in territories and local communities: that's where the single market should show its strength and opportunities."

Galligani's opinion will be voted on by the CoR Plenary in March 2026.
