ARLEM Plenary Session in Amman highlights role of regions in tackling Mediterranean challenges

Robert Zeman and Michael Rosenberg represented the ECR Group at the 15th Plenary Session of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) in Amman, Jordan, stressing the core messages of the Group with regard to the conflict in the Middle East, to economic and geo-political challenges.

"Local and regional authorities are fully committed to helping de-escalate the situation and reduce tension in the Middle East. The role of Jordan and of the Mediterranean regions is crucial as well in keeping the dialogue open to achieve a cease-fire", said Robert Zeman.

The ARLEM Plenary further discussed economic challenges, as the provision of energy supplies in view of a transition towards a mix of more sustainable resources. Furthermore, participants tackled the issues of water resilience as well as the need to strengthen intercultural dialogue to foster awareness of local traditions.

"Whether it is about a more just transition or promoting Europe's cultural heritage, we cannot underestimate the role of local and regional communities. Local authorities need to be more involved in the decision-making process and they need to be equipped with the right tools to face those challenges", said Michael Rosenberg.

Finally, thanks to ECR member Gaetano Galvagno's initiative, next year's ARLEM Plenary Session will be held in Palermo, Sicily. "It is a great pride and honor for me to host local and regional leaders in my region at a crucial time to define the political and strategic agenda for the years to come", said Galvagno, President of Sicily's Regional Assembly.
