Conservative local leaders commit to unite in the fight against drug trafficking and criminality

The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group in the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) today held an event bringing together local and regional leaders and experts to discuss how regions and cities can unite in the fight against drug trafficking to make local communities safe and secure. Panellists discussed the very serious safety and security threats facing the EU today including organised crime, illicit trafficking and radicalisation.

The opinion's key messages include calls for better recognition of family-friendly policies, provision of financial support, and better involvement of local and regional authorities in providing help for European families.

President Marsilio warns about unfair competition from China for the European automotive industry

Speaking in his capacity as the CoR rapporteur of the opinion "A Just Transition for all EU regions", President Marsilio began by welcoming the European Commission's decision to impose new duties on imports of electric vehicles from China. For the Abruzzo President, allowing Chinese electric vehicles, which are heavily subsidised by the government, to flood the European market will "jeopardise the European automotive industry as we know it", he stated during the first annual meeting of the CoRAI (Committee of the Regions Automotive Intergroup).

During a CoR debate on a Blue Deal for Europe, our Vice-President Oldřich Vlasák underlined the importance of increasing the involvement of local and regional authorities in water policy "especially in terms of agriculture in order to minimise water shortages and floods".

Matteo Bianchi's roadmap to fight drug-trafficking endorsed by unanimity

In the draft opinion on fighting drug-trafficking led by CIVEX coordinator Matteo Bianchi members of the CoR called for adequate policing, lighting and surveillance systems to help counter what it described as a "proliferation of zones of lawlessness linked to the retail drug trade across European cities".

During the plenary debate with Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, and Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, ECR ECON coordinator Ilpo Heltimoinen welcomed the European Commission's initiatives to boost competitiveness and innovation, but called for more focus to preparing regions for the challenges of tomorrow.
