Summer camps for children from Ukraine organised by ECR members a big success

The European Committee of the Regions in cooperation with the Association of Ukrainian Cities, promoted the idea of European regions and cities organising summer camps for Ukrainian children, as an act of solidarity that offers a sense of normality to some of the millions of Ukrainian children whose lives have been shaken by the war. The summer camps are part of a broader show of solidarity by the EU’s cities and regions, ranging from humanitarian aid to twinnings and commitments to support the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Presidents of regions call for additional funds to address the Ukrainian refugee crisis at ECR workshop

During the 151st CoR plenary session on 10-12 October, the ECR political group in the CoR hosted its annual workshop. This year's workshop was entitled "Refugees fleeing the war: the role of border regions" and discussed regional efforts in the Ukrainian refugee crisis and the EU tools available to address it. Conclusions were also drawn about the ongoing interpretation of and distinction made between legal and illegal immigrants.

During the October CoR plenary session Matteo Bianchi, ECR Coordinator in the Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs (CIVEX) and City Councillor in Varese in Italy, represented our group in debate on the Future of Europe with Dubravka Šuica, European Commission Vice President for Democracy and Demography. Our member warned that the Conference on the Future of Europe must not be used to centralise the EU.

Ilpo Heltimoinen elected First Vice-Chair of ECON Commission

Our Finnish member Ilpo Heltimoinen has been elected First Vice-Chair of the European Committee of the Regions' Commission for Economic Policy (ECON) at the Commission´s external meeting on 22 September in Zwolle, the Netherlands. Mr. Heltimoinen, Lappeenranta City Councilor, will hold this position for the second half of the mandate, a total of 2.5 years.
